History
1834 - The beginning
The Mosque, known as AZ Zaviyathul Fakhira, holds a venerable history of 187 years and has a significant affiliation with the Shazuliya Thariqa. Its construction took place in the year 1834, meticulously assembled using durable materials such as Jute (Goni) and sturdy planks for its foundation. Moreover, the roof was elegantly adorned with Galvanized Sheets (Thakaran), adding to the splendor and resilience of this sacred place of worship.
1915
During the tumultuous year of 1915, riots erupted between the Muslim and Sinhalese communities, resulting in damage to the Masjid. Thankfully, the restoration of this sacred place was facilitated with the assistance of either Sir Robert Chalmers or Sir Reginald Edward Stubs, who served as the British Governor during that period. Their benevolent efforts played a pivotal role in ensuring the reconstruction and preservation of the Masjid, fostering communal harmony and religious cohesion in the aftermath of the unfortunate events.
1970
In the year 1970, the esteemed Board of Trustees, in collaboration with the generous support of the Mohalla Jamaath, Donors, and notably Al Haj Naleem (may he rest in peace), undertook the ambitious task of constructing the Masjid. Their unwavering dedication and financial contributions were instrumental in making this sacred project a reality.
1972
In the year 1972 Jumma Prayers commenced. During this period the members of the Jamaath was approximately 600.
Late 90s
With the increase in the number of Jamaath members the need arised to expand the Masjid to accommodate 3000 persons to offer their congregational prayers both Five Times and the weekly Jumma Prayers.
2013
In the year 2013 the Board of Trustees along with Mohalla Jamaath members, Donors initiated to purchase the land adjoining the Masjid for the expansion program. At present the Masjid is known as AL JAMIYATHUL FAKHIRA JUMMA MASJID.
